Our Youth Band Solo Cornet player, Christopher Oddy has had a remarkably successful 2018, collecting no less than 13 individual trophies by playing his cornet, accompanied on piano by his dad Peter (Euphonium player with the Concert Band), in various Solo competitions.
The day after appearing in the Regional Final of the Rotary Young Musician competition in Doncaster, Christopher received four trophies at the April Leicestershire BBA Solos Competition including the Harry Bray Memorial Trophy as 'Overall Junior Champion'. A week later, he collected two more at the West Midlands BBA Solos event (after playing for Enderby Youth at the National Youth Brass Band Championships earlier the same day). In July at the City of Coventry and Warwickshire Brass Festival, he won an amazing five trophies including the Festival Champion Shield. Then this November, a week after playing 'Last Post' outside in the dark at Willoughby-on-the-Wolds in Nottinghamshire, he gained another two trophies at the Leicester Competitive Festival of Music and Drama, including the coveted 'Silver Fox' trophy as winner of the Young Performer of the Year Final.
In addition Christopher, who has been taught by both Pat Allsopp and Sheila Allen in the past, played at the National Children's Brass Band course in July, the Cheltenham First Section National Finals in September and helped Enderby Youth and Senior Bands to several more trophies since then, plus scoring 140+ for his ABRSM Grade 7 Cornet exam. All in all, a wonderfully successful year!
Since then he has been invited to join both the NCBBGB in Repton for the 3rd time and the NYBBGB in Harrogate and Repton for the first time. Chris has also established himself as a full time member of the Senior Band, where he plays 2nd Cornet as part of the 2018 Enderby Band Section of the Year.
Well done Chris! Thank you for representing the Enderby Band Organisation with such distinction.
