Enderby Band have been crowned Midlands 1st Section Champion Band, after winning the regional round of the National Brass Band Championships. The band have now been invited to represent the Midlands as Champions at the National Finals held in Cheltenham in September and also sees the band promoted to the Championship Section in 2020.
Playing off a late draw of 14 in a 15-band field, the band’s performance of the set work, Gilbert Vinter’s classic ‘Symphony of Marches’ received a huge ovation from the audience and clearly caught the ears of the adjudicators Alan Morrison and John Winterflood. In his detailed summing up after the contest, Alan Morrison stated that while most bands struggled with consistency across the piece, there was a clear winner. John Winterflood’s remarks sheet stated that there was ‘much to commend’ in the performance, praising the bands rhythmic and dynamic control and finally stating ‘I enjoyed listening to this, well done!’
It will be the second successive year the band has been to the National Finals, having qualified from 3rd place last year. The band previously won the title in 2014, however they narrowly failed to gain promotion that year. The win comes with the band in a rich stream of form under the Musical Directorship of Ryan Richards. Since Ryan took over the role in July 2018, the band have won the Bolsover Festival of Brass 1st Section, gained 2nd place at the Leicestershire Brass Band Association contest and were placed a highly-commendable 7th place in a truly Championship Section field at the Welsh Open.
After the contest, a delighted Ryan said:
‘This is a fantastic and well deserved result for the band. I was really happy with the performance, they did everything I asked. They work so hard and show unbelievable levels of commitment at times – this is our 3rd contest since the beginning of the year and the 7th since the finals. I’m really pleased and proud of them. We are top of the grading tables by a long way and will be promoted having been to the finals in the previous two years. It’ll be tough in the Championship Section next year, but there is no better way to be promoted and we are well prepared and ready for the challenge.’
The band’s players are now enjoying a well-earned week off and will resume rehearsals on Tuesday 19th March, to start preparations for a joint concert with the Youth Band, Shirebrook Contest and the summer season of concerts.
