National Finalists!!

14 Mar 2018

Members of the Senior Band are celebrating another fantastic contest result after being placed 3rd at the recent Midland Regional Qualifying Championships. The placing means the band are one of three to be invited to represent the Midlands region at the prestigous National Finals in September. It is the second time the band has been to 'The Nationals' in recent years, having previously competed in 2014 as Midlands Area Champions.

After two early draws in this contest in previous years and a raft of 'unlucky' early draws recently, the band were pleased to be playing from a relatively late fifteenth draw of the eighteen competing bands. Although confident after a good run of rehearsals beforehand, the band's players knew they would need to be on their mettle as the set test piece, James Curnow's 'Brass Metamorphosis' was a tricky prospect with a number of exposed solos waiting to catch out any unprepared or unsuspecting player. INdeed, before the performance, news from the hall was that there had been a couple of good performances, but a number of bands had fallen victim to the piece's various difficulties.

The performance started well, with the band displaying the overall sound and togetherness Simon Gresswell has worked so hard to develop. However, as the performance progressed odd slips started to creep in and it is fair to say that overall it was not our best. The band left the stage thinking they had just missed an opportunity, but this was not the view of the audience or the brass band press who gave the performance a very positive reception, with brass band news website stating 'Enderby produced a fantastic, exciting performance'.

After a quick post performance pint, the band reassembled in the hall to listen to the thoughts of our two adjudicators Major Paul Norley and Richard Marshall. After announcing last year's second placed band Rushden Town in the unlucky fourth place, Enderby were announced in third place, with our local rivals and friends Foresters second and Staffordshire in first place.

After the results a jubilant Simon Gresswell stated he was delighted with the result - if not the performance! And that the band had worked incredibly hard on the piece and were richly deserving of the trip to the finals.

Maybe it was a 'what might have been' type of performance, but the band are delighted to have the honour to represent their region at a national level, and will do so with the hard work and determination that has become a trait of Enderby under the direction of Simon Gresswell.

Our congratulations go to fellow finalists Foresters and Staffordshire
