New Signings for Enderby Band

22 Sep 2016

The Enderby Band are pleased to announce a number of changes to their personnel as they prepare for a busy autumn period.

Recently the band said farewell to two young members as they leave to continue their studies at university. The band’s tuned percussionist, Lucy Ashmore is leaving to study Sport and Exercise Science at Northampton University. Lucy joined Enderby from the Youth Band and as a part of the percussion team, has played a key role in Enderby’s recent success in the entertainment competition field.

Another university-bound member is Tom Jenkins. Tom is leaving to study Music Technology at Huddersfield University. Another product of the Youth Band, during his time in the Senior Band, Tom has been a valuable member of the euphonium and baritone bench as the band’s 2nd baritone and more recently 2nd euphonium.

A band spokesperson commented:

It’s always great to see our younger players develop and grow both as people and musically. It’s been our privilege to have Lucy and Tom in the band and their contribution is greatly appreciated. They have both come from the Enderby Bands Organisation Youth Development Programme and they were both still active members of the Enderby Youth Band right up until they left for university. They leave us with our very best wishes and we are sure we will see them back in the bandroom soon.

Whilst Lucy will still be helping out for the band’s forthcoming concert and contest commitments, the 2nd baritone seat vacated by Tom has been filled by our former 1st horn, Kate Salter. Kate had previously played baritone for Newstead band, so is a proficient and experienced baritone player.

The 1st horn seat vacated by Kate has been filled by Jenny Shaw. Jenny is a very familiar face at Enderby, another former Youth Band member, this is in fact her third stint in the Senior Band horn section. Jenny comes to us after a short break from playing, having previously played for Leicestershire Co-op Band. Jenny is over the moon to become a member of the team and commented:

It's great to be returning back to where I started my banding life! I'm looking forward to a busy time ahead on both the concert and contest stage.

Earlier in the summer, the band signed Chris Jelley to the 2nd euphonium seat. Chris is a graduate of Salford University and yet another player to come out of our Youth Band. Chris brings a wealth of experience with him, having played for several bands throughout the county including Oddfellows and Ratby Senior Band. Speaking of his decision to join the band Chris said:

I'm very happy to be back at Enderby. The band has always been hard working, friendly and social and I'm pleased to find that that has not changed whilst I was away. I'm delighted at the quality of the band and I see a very bright future for the Enderby Organinsation.

Finally, the band is delighted to announce the signing of Peter Seddon on BBb Bass. Peter is a former member of Youth Brass 2000 and Northamptonshire County Youth Brass Band. Peter is currently on a gap year internship for Northamptonshire County Music Service. Speaking of the signings, the spokesperson remarked:

These signings really strengthen the middle and lower end of the band, so we’re very pleased to announce them. Kate has lots of experience on baritone, so when it became clear Jenny was interested in joining us, it was an obvious decision for Kate to move onto baritone. We would like to thank Kate publicly for suggesting the move. It’s great to have Jenny’s smiling face back at Enderby. She has immediately linked back up with our solo horn Bob Foulds, and has maintained the standard of what was probably our strongest section. Chris is also a very accomplished player and has settled in very well with our other Chris’ on solo euphonium and 1st baritone. Finally, Peter is developing in to a very good player. He has a good pedigree from Youth Brass and we are sure he will learn and mature under the guidance of our MD Simon Gresswell.

The new players have a few weeks to settle in before the band makes its debut at Bolsover Festival of Brass on October 2nd. In the afternoon of the same day, the band will dash back to Leicestershire in order to appear at a special concert to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday, held at Leicester’s £64m Curve Theatre and broadcast on BBC local radio.
