Reward and Recognition at Annual Awards Evening

23 Feb 2020

The Enderby Band Organisation gathered its masses together on the evening of 22 February at Leicester Lions Rugby Club for its annual awards evening.  All bands within the organisation were represented and numerous awards given out in recognition of the work not only of playing members, but also the many, many people who work tirelessly in the background to help make the organisation the success it is today.

Two organisational awards were presented, the first, the John and Doreen Sleath award, was presented to Pat Allsopp for her many years of service to the Enderby Band Organisation.  Pat joined the organisation in the 1980s when she set up the Junior Band, working alongside the Musical Director for the Youth Band.  Although Pat retired officially from her contesting days fairly recently, she still helps out when needed within the organisation and is still actively involved in the recruitment of new junior players and can always be found in the band room on Junior Band nights helping out within individual and small group tuition.

The Townsend award was the second organisational presentation of the evening and this was presented jointly to Ian Hayto and Sam Hayto.  On presenting the award, Organisation President, Garry Sleath, said ‘Not only do Ian and Sam both play with the Enderby Band, but they also work across the organisation and over the last couple of years, both have assisted with the work of the Building Committee.  Ian manages the Organisation website and is also Chairman of the Enderby Band, a job which sometimes requires difficult decisions to be made, but is always done in a tactful way.  Sam works quietly behind the scenes looking into funding and grant applications and working on publicity to raise the profile of the Enderby Band and organisation as a whole.

Moving on to the Enderby Band awards, current players are asked to vote for their ‘players player’ and this year the vote was unanimous and went to our solo euphonium player, Andy Mayell.  Andy has been coerced into playing a couple of solos over the last year, his most recent, left us in awe at the speed of which his fingers were moving, we’re sure there was steam coming off them!  He certainly leads the euph/bari section by example!

During his speech and recap of the last year, Musical Director, Ryan Richards presented his MD award to repiano cornet player, Carys Owen.  Carys has worked her way up the back row to the repiano seat and we’ve seen such an increase in her confidence and she’s doing a fantastic job.  Carys is also principal cornet of our Youth Band and is also heavily involved on their Committee.  Sadly Carys will be leaving us later this year as she moves on to the next stage of her education at university – she’ll certainly be missed.

Section of the year for 2019 was awarded to Rhys Kerry, Jenny Fish, Bob Foulds and Sarah Moore, who make up our Horns and Flugel section.

The Committee award this year was presented to Sam Hayto.  Not liking the limelight, Sam works behind the scenes and over the last year has worked on raising the profile of the Band setting up new social media sites, producing our player adverts, press releases and promotional material for concerts.  Sam also developed a ‘welcome pack’ which is given to all new players and it is planned for this to be adapted for the other groups within the organisation.

Ryan Richards, Musical Director said “It’s an honour to be part of the Enderby Band Organisation.  The work ethic of the whole organisation is fantastic, but it’s the commitment and hard work of the Enderby Band that is most admirable.  The whole band have family and work lives outside of band, however, the input over the last year has been phenomenal and has shown in not only our contest results, but the concerts too.  Going forward I’d like to work towards more integration and joint working with all groups within the organisation.”

We’re now looking forward to another busy, fun filled year.  If you’d like to know more about the Enderby Band, please do take a look at our social media sites, our website or give us a call, we’d love to hear from you.
